Colorado Tang Soo Do presents

2-Year

Anniversary

Martial Arts

Festival

Two years in our dojang on South Chambers Road. One Saturday morning to open the doors to everybody. Break a real board. Hit the pads. Watch the demos. Meet the family that runs the place. No experience, no uniform, and no commitment required.

Free admission

All ages, 4 to 84

Walk-ins welcome

Nothing to sign

The one on this page is free. So is the real one.

Running all morning

Four things you can actually do that day

Nothing here is a spectator sport. Every station is staffed by an instructor from 10:00 until we lock up at noon, and every one of them is open to you whether you're four, forty, or watching from a folding chair.

Station 01

Break a board

Real pine, sized to you, held by someone who does this every week. You get coached through the setup and you keep the pieces.

Station 02

Hit the pads

Gloves on, an instructor on the mitts. Kids love this one. So do parents who've had a long week.

Station 03

Try on a belt

See the ranks, feel a dobok, ask what the stripes mean. Good place to take a photo of your kid.

Station 04

Ask anything

Schedules, pricing, whether your shy seven-year-old will be okay, what Tang Soo Do even is. We'd rather answer it now than have you wonder.

The morning, hour by hour

Come for twenty minutes.

Stay for all of it.

You don't need to arrive at a particular time, the floor is busy from 10:00 to noon. But if you want to catch a student demo, aim for 10:30 or 11:15.

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM · Continuous

Board-breaking station, pad-work station, and the sign-up table are open the entire time. Instructors are spread across the floor, not huddled in a corner — walk up to any of them.

Tai Chi with Mr. Dan Farquharson

We open half an hour early for a free, gentle Tai Chi class. Slow, standing, low-impact, and genuinely built for absolute beginners and anyone easing back into movement. Wear something comfortable and come as you are.

Student demonstration

Our students take the floor by belt level; white belts first, working all the way up through forms, combinations and self-defense. Our advanced belts close it out, and the whole thing finishes with board breaking.

Same demo, run again for everyone who arrived later in the morning. Board breaking finale again. If you can only make one thing, make it this.

Photos & questions

Last calls and last boards

The floor stays open for anyone who still wants a board or a round on the pads. Instructors shift toward one-on-one conversations, and we take photos with everybody who broke something.

The part everyone rememberS

Yes, you.

Yes, a real board.

Breaking a board is not about being strong. It's about committing to the strike instead of stopping an inch short, which is a lesson that turns out to be about more than wood. It takes about ninety seconds to learn and you will not stop thinking about it for a week.

  • Boards are graded by thickness — we match one to the person breaking it.

  • An instructor sets your stance, holds the board, and calls the count.

  • Kids as young as four break them. So do grandparents.

  • You keep both halves. Sign them if you want.

Who you'll be talking to

One family, four instructors,

a hundred-plus years between them

Colorado Tang Soo Do is run by the Farquharsons; a father, two brothers and a sister who all trained under the same masters in Meriden, Connecticut, starting in the eighties. All four will be on the floor on August 29.

Mark Farquharson

6th Dan · Kukche Sabom Nim · Founder

Started training in 1988 at age four. Founded the school and moved it into this building. He'll be running the two student demos.

David Farquharson

4th Dan · Master Instructor

Training since 1985. Runs Farhorizon Martial Arts out of Montessori Del Mundo — find him for after-school questions, or at the board-breaking station.

Megan Farquharson

3rd Dan · Certified Instructor

Training since 1990, also studies Modern Arnis. She'll be on the pads with the kids — and she's a parent herself, so ask her the parent questions.

Dan Farquharson

2nd Dan · Certified Instructor

Over thirty years in Tang Soo Do, and the reason the whole family trains. He teaches the free 9:30 Tai Chi class.

Before you come

The questions

everyone asks

Do I have to sign up?

No. Walk in any time between 9:30 and noon. Putting your name down just means we'll text you a reminder the day before and let you know what's happening on the floor.

Is it really free?

Yes. No ticket, no donation, no contract on a clipboard. If you decide later that you want to train with us, we'll be glad to talk about it, but nobody is going to chase you to your car.

What should we wear?

Anything you can move in. Shoes come off at the edge of the mats, bare feet or socks on the floor. That's the whole dress code.

Can my kid really break a board?

Almost certainly. We use boards graded by thickness and match one to the person breaking it, and an instructor coaches every single attempt. Most kids get it on the first try, and the ones who don't get another go.

Is there anything here for adults?

The 9:30 Tai Chi class is aimed squarely at adults, and both stations are open to kids and adults all morning. Plenty of our students started in their thirties, forties and beyond.

My kid is shy. Or I'm not in shape.

Come anyway and watch from the side. Nobody gets pulled onto the floor. We train people at every level of fitness, and standing at the edge for an hour is a completely normal way to spend your first visit.

How long should we plan to stay?

Thirty to forty-five minutes gets you a demo, a board, and a real conversation. Stay the whole two and a half hours if you're having fun.

What about after-school programs?

Master David Farquharson runs Farhorizon Martial Arts out of Montessori Del Mundo. He'll be on the floor with information and can answer questions for families looking at after-school care.

Where do we park?

There's a lot right out front at 4272 S Chambers Road. Come in the main entrance — the sign-up table is the first thing you'll see.

Save your spot

Walk-ins are genuinely welcome — this isn't a ticket. Adding your name just lets us text you a reminder the day before, send you a heads-up about what's on the floor, and have a rough headcount so we bring enough boards.
